Traffic Delays Expected for the State Route 74
(Ortega Highway) Safety Improvement Project
Work begins February20, 2007


IRVINE - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is embarking on a 3-year Safety Improvement Project on State Route 74 –Ortega Highway. With Safety as Caltrans number one priority, the goal of the project is to reduce accidents and to save lives.

WHEN: Construction begins on February 20, 2007 at 8:30 p.m. with a full closure of the highway. Full closures will take place during nighttime hours of 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Ortega Highway will be reduced to one-lane of travel for the duration of the project. During the day, flagging operations will be in place. In addition, during peak commute hours, priority will be given to westbound morning commute traffic and eastbound evening commute traffic.

WHERE: On a 3.3 mile section of Ortega Highway, from the San Juan Creek Bridge in Orange County to the Riverside County line. Work is anticipated to be complete in 2010.

WHAT: Project features will include:
#61607; Adding safety enhancements to reduce road closures due to rock slides
#61607; Place rumble strips in the median
#61607; Improving motorists sight distances by removing protruding rock walls
#61607; Widening the existing 10-foot lanes to standard 12-foot lanes
#61607; Improving drainage facilities into San Juan Creek
#61607; Improve turnouts and add two new turnouts, one in each direction
#61607; Adding 4-foot shoulders to each side of the Highway

The State Highway Operation Protection Program (SHOPP) is funding this $40M project. The project will improve sight distance, and provide more room for motorists to safely maneuver within the project area.

Commuters should expect long delays and are urged to seek alternate routes around the construction. A community open house is planned for February 20, 2007 in San Juan Capistrano and on February 26, 2007 in Lake Elsinore. Location and times will be posted on the District 12 website at http://www.dot.ca.gov/district12.
